Pellet rifle recommendations
Hey, Y'all:
I have a few critters funning around my yard (mostly rabbit and a hedge hog type thing) who last year enjoyed my garden a little too much. The funnest solution, so it seems to me, would be to hunt the little buggers but using a rifle would not be smart. I figured a pellet rifle would do almost as well and I could teach my girl to shoot in the privacy of my yard. About the closest I can get to the critters is about 20 yards or 15 meters. I have an open yard except for a small wooded area . What pellet rifles would you recommend? Thanks for any advice. The Great Ag |
Re: Pellet rifle recommendations
Like about everything, the range in prices on airguns has a wide spread. You can get a decent .177 cal air rifle for around a 100 FRNs (Gamo), to high priced European airguns (Beeman, RWS, etc). I've got a Gamo airgun in .177, shoots 1000 fps, I like it for punching paper. I dunno about clean kills with it on a rabbit-sized critter. For varmints, I'd look at .22 cal airguns. Not sure, but I think to get into a .22 cal air rifle, you'd be looking at $200 minimum.

Hey, Agman:
Thanks for the reply. Is there a manufacturer you recommend over another? There are a ton of choices out there. The Great Ag |
Re: Pellet rifle recommendations
I've got a Benjamin .22 cal it does a fine job on the critters around my place.
Mine was $99 when I bought it a few years ago. Looks like they are going up too. http://www.academy.com/index.php?pag...348-00335-0342 |

Re: Pellet rifle recommendations
I have a hand pump pellet rifle I got for $25. It should be powerful enough to kill a varmint at 15-20 feet, assuming you are a good shot. However, I would be concerned about wounding it and having it get away. It might be more practical for your situation to leave some traps out. They will be at work, even when you are not around. If/When you catch something, you will then have a better chance of a one-shot kill.

Re: Pellet rifle recommendations
My Benjamin 22 has killed 10 pound woodchucks. Easy to pump to it's 10 pump limit[about 750 fps]. Very accurrate with the right pellets[it likes the german RWS]. Still USA made I think.

Re: Pellet rifle recommendations
I have a Benjamin Discovery .22 that's been the deal. Popping squirrels at your ranges is not a problem.

Re: Pellet rifle recommendations
The Benjamin would be a good choice, or this dual caliber (.177/.22) Beeman. 850 fps in .22 cal.

Re: Pellet rifle recommendations
Gamo Big Cat here, I got it last summer and it cranks! 1000 fps .177 cal (1200fps with alloy) the whole package with a scope about $140.
Break barrel one pump action. My only complaint is I had to put a scope stop on it because it crept. Its a killer. |

Re: Pellet rifle recommendations
Wow, thanks for all the great recommendations. As I was researching y'alls choices, I found out Delaware laws PROHIBIT shipping pellet rifles by mail. CRAP!!!! The gun shops around here do not carry them and Wally world has cheapy cheapies that I would waste FRNs on.
So now, I must drive at least 45 minutes to find a decent pellet rifle or atleast call them and see if they can order one for me. Hey, St. Germain: I did that already when I was 12 years old. I was using my BB gun in the back yard shooting targets. In this case balloons. One ballon did not have enough air, it could aborb the impact, and the FPS of the rifle was not adequate to puncture, so the BB richoted right back at me thunking me in the middle of my forehead. :thumb.aspx: If my aim sucked, the BB would have missed by a mile. Re: Pellet rifle recommendations
I had pellet rifles in the past. I would recommend one for small pest control or foraging for small critters to put in the pot if SHTF. But, I found a good 22 bolt rifle with CCI CB caps are VERY quiet, and in most cases quieter than most high velocity pellet rifles. CBs shoot accurately and hit as hard as 22 cal. pellets. I no longer use air rifles and would strongly recommend the CB caps for your intended purpose.
Another opinion: "I have used the cci "long" cb caps for more than 30 years. in a long barreled rifle they are very quiet and in my rifle have been as accurate as regular ammo. they make less noise than my sheridan air rifle. I hunted squerrils with them for years after hunting was banned where I grew up and no one ever knew but me. good luck." Jim. |
Re: Pellet rifle recommendations
JM2C, but there is a traveling tool show "cummins tools" they sell a chinese single shot pellet rifle, single shot. .177 cal, with a CHROME BORE! lol. anyway, i bought one of these and its wicked powerful, shoots right through both sides of a coffee can and can kill a raccoon or skunk @ 50 yds. they are only about $25, its heavy though as its somewhat patterned after a mosin nagant in size and weight(not huge long like a 91/30) and has sks type sights and has scope mounts built in.

power ranges between ok to poor, might be ok for a small squirrel at 15 to 20 yards. and accuracy is terrible even with a decent scope fitted. spend 100 to 200 and gat a gamo in .177. .22 cal spring type airrifles performance can suffer greatly from even a slight deterioration in spring. .22 cal cb shorts and longs can be much more powerfull than air rifle pellets and almost as quiet perhaps even more quiet but they do tend to ricoche much worst than a pellet which just seems to "splatter" in many cases the ricoche is louder than the shot so these are not the best for back yard shooting. |

Must have been the one you bought then. we have two actually, although not dead nuts accurate by any means, IT IS a pellet rifle. i can buy a Ruger 10/22 for the price of a Gamo. |

The BB Caps are great for squirrels and such and you can actually hear a thud when they hit. I've been at war with them for 40 years and it's not over yet

CCI are loud in a Pistol. But the longer the barrel the quieter they get.
Bolt action 22 for the WIN on these. E-A |
